Neighbourhood Clothing Store

Street Address : 287 Princess Street

Before Dolan’s Smo-King became what it is now—a retailer of cigarettes and leather goods—it was home to Dolan’s harness store. And before that, it was where Louis Routbard’s clothing store was located. Louis was from White Russia (Belarus), and his wife Leah from Vilna, Lithuania. They emigrated to Montreal in 1908 and settled in Kingston in 1914. He sold second-hand clothing here until 1924 when the family returned to Montreal. Fourteen years later, the family returned to Kingston and opened a dry goods store at Bagot and Bay Streets (kitty corner to Cochrane’s Grocery store).

For a time Routbard’s Neighborhood Clothing Store also operated out of 214 Montreal, at the corner of Montreal and Raglan.
